2) Is Viola's disguise meant to represent something beyond her physical appearance?
3) Why does Olivia choose seven years to be in mourning? Does it have some significance to the way her brother died?
4) Is Toby's drunkenness simply for a humor factor, or is it to reiterate the idea of Olivia being detached from any men in her life?
5) What makes this play so easily adaptable to film and modern culture (i.e. She's the Man)?
6) Is Viola's brother really dead, or did the Captain's questions about him foreshadow his return?
We discussed in class today that the purpose for Viola to disguise herself as a man is for protection. In that time period, women did not walk around by themselves, especially when they don't know the area well. When Viola discusses her disguise with the captain, he didn't seem surprised(I.2.50-67), so maybe this is common. Also, during Shakespeare's time all roles were done by men or boys, even if it is a role of a woman.
ReplyDelete5) My guess on this would be that the play has themes that are somewhat timeless, and that's why we can relate to them so much even in today's culture. In a sense, Viola's love for Orsino is somewhat forbidden or unattainable, and that is a very real concept for people today, especially teenagers.

We discussed in class today that the reason the play it titled "Twelfth Night" is because it is based off the 12th day of Christmas. It is the end of the holiday and a big celebration. A little fun fact but in the movie "Shakespeare in Love" the queen requests a play on the 12th night, probably not true but still a fun little piece of information.
